The retailer's production database contained a Sales schema with a table Customers, providing a list of regular customers. The vendor used a staging database to add a table Accounts and a foreign key constraint to the table Customers, which referenced AccountID field of the table Accounts. After applying other changes, the retailer tried to synchronize the production and staging databases.

See the script sample for details.

The synchronization failed, because the foreign key of the Customers table could not be created, as the Accounts table was moved to the Sales database without data. The retailer was searching for a reliable tool to quickly complete this task without any errors and efforts.

(The case was slightly simplified to illustrate how effectively Devart's tools address a number of similar cases. We can't disclose the retailer's name considering the contract terms.)

Solution

Devart Company offered a clear and efficient solution for such a case. Using dbForge Schema Compare and dbForge Data Compare - two specially designed tools for non-trivial schema and data comparison and synchronization tasks - the desired synchronization was successfully done, even quicker as simple schema synchronization the vendor experienced using the other tool.

Task completion

The vendor launched dbForge Schema Compare to compare the staging database Sales_v2 and the production one Sales_v1. The comprehensive schema comparison wizard helped to compare the selected schemas using the "Ignore foreign keys" option.

The comparison results showed the Customers tables as identical and, after synchronization, the Accounts table was created in the Sales_v1 database.

Then dbForge Data Compare was used to synchronize the data in compared tables. The convenient data comparison wizard provided quick selecting and comparing of required databases. Moreover, the retailer was delighted to find many essential comparison options offered.

The data comparison results were automatically grouped by the difference type, which significantly simplified their analysis. The data synchronization wizard provided safe as well as quick data synchronization, offering to backup a Target database and use other useful features to deliver the customized result the retailer needed.

Then the vendor returned to the comparison results in dbForge Schema Compare and recompared the schemas, turning off the "Ignore foreign keys" option, selected for the first comparison. The text comparer under the grid showed the foreign keys differences in the compared tables Customers.
