How To: Create a Backup

There are many reasons that can cause data loss. These are, for example, an operating system crash, power failure, hardware problem and many others. So it is necessary to make database backup periodically.

dbForge SQL Azure Backup can backup a database to another ZIP file containing SQL files (that may be read and corrected), database that is stored in Windows Azure Storage, or database in your local network. With dbForge SQL Azure Backup you can perform a full database backup, a backup only of a database schema, or a backup only of table data.

To backup a database you have to follow the procedure below:

  1. In the SQL Azure Connection section of the SQL Azure page, specify source connection properties and a database.

  2. In the Backup Destination section of the SQL Azure page, select where you want to backup a database and specify backup destination properties.

  3. On the Options page, select backup options. Click Next.

    Transaction-consistent backup

Select this option to create a temporary copy of the database (CREATE DATABASE ... AS COPY OF ...) to ensure the integrity of the database schema and table data of a backup.

    Backup database schema

Select this option to generate two schema restore T-SQL scripts: first to re-create the database itself, and second to create database objects. The first script may include additional actions to create server logins.

    Backup table data

Select this option to generate data restore T-SQL script, which truncates all tables and fills them with rows. The script may include additional actions like temporary dropping of foreign keys and indexes, disabling.

    NoteNote:

The Backup database schema and Backup table data checkboxes are disabled when the DAC Service option is selected in the Backup Destination section of the SQL Azure page.

The Transaction-consistent backup checkbox is disabled when the Backup File option is selected in the Backup Destination section of the SQL Azure page.

  4. On the Progress page, click Back if you want to modify backup settings or click New Session if you want to set up a new backup.
