Connect DBxtra to Microsoft Excel Online and access data

Accessing a Microsoft Excel Online database can be fast and seamless with an Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) solution. Devart ODBC Driver for Microsoft Excel Online provides full interoperability and allows you to access live Microsoft Excel Online data. The driver enables you to retrieve, view, and modify Microsoft Excel Online data directly within DBxtra.

Step 1. Create a new ODBC connection

Select or create a project in DBxtra. Then, on the Home tab, select Data Connection > ODBC Connection.

Step 2. Name the connection

In the Connection name field, enter a name for the connection. Next, click the Ellipsis (...) ellipsis button to start selecting a data source.

Step 3. Select the provider type

On the Provider tab, select Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers, then click Next.

Step 4. Select your DSN

Under Use data source name, select your DSN. You can also select the catalog that you want to use under Enter the initial catalog to use. To verify the connection settings, click Test Connection. Then click OK to save the data source settings.

Step 5. Set the SQL dialect and user access

In SQL dialect, select ANSI SQL/2003. Under Select User Groups who can view this Connection, select the needed options.

Step 6. Save and view the connection

Click Ok to save the connection. The connection appears in Project Explorer under Data Connections.

Step 7. Create a new report object and a query

On the Home tab, first click Report Object, then Click here to define a new Query.

Step 8. Select the data connection

Select the data connection, then click Select.

Step 9. Build the SQL query

On the Query tab, select the tables and columns to retrieve, and define relationships if needed. The generated SQL query is displayed in the SQL pane.

Select the Data Grid tab. The data is displayed in a table.

How to download, install, and configure Devart ODBC Driver for Microsoft Excel Online

Download the driver

Click Download in the upper-right corner of this page. Under Download for Windows, click Download next to the EXE or MSI file or—if you're not signed in—click Get Trial, sign up or sign in to your Devart account, and then click Download next to the needed file.

Run the downloaded installer. Click Next and follow the instructions.

If you don't have an activation key yet, select Trial; if you've already purchased a license, select Activation Key and enter your key. Then, click Next. To complete the driver installation, click Finish.

Open ODBC Data Source Administrator

Click Start on the taskbar, type ODBC Data Sources, and select a matching result. The ODBC Data Source Administrator opens.

Add a data source (DSN)

Go to the User DSN or System DSN tab and click Add. Select the driver and click Finish.

On the General tab, enter a Data Source Name, Description, and other details required to connect to the data source.

Click Test Connection to make sure that all details are correct. Then, click OK to save the data source and complete the configuration.
