What is an ODBC driver?

ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) is a standard application programming interface that allows external applications such as Microsoft Excel or Power BI, and programming languages such as PHP, Python, etc. access data from a common database or cloud application. ODBC driver enables accessing data in relational and non-relational databases and cloud applications directly from Windows, macOS, and Linux.

How to install an ODBC driver?

It's recommended to first delete an older version of the driver if you have one installed. To install the ODBC Driver for Salesforce:

  1. Run the downloaded installer file and click Next.
  2. Read and accept the license agreement, then click Next.
  3. Select the installation directory for the ODBC driver and click Next.
  4. In the Select Components tab, select which version of the driver to install (64-bit / 32-bit), and whether to include the help files.
  5. Then confirm or change the Start Menu Folder and click Next.
  6. Input your activation key or choose Trial if you want to evaluate the product before getting a license. Click Next and then Install.
  7. After the installation is completed, click Finish.
How to create an ODBC connection to Salesforce?

It is supposed that you have already installed the ODBC Driver for Salesforce on your machine. After installing the driver, create a DSN for Salesforce:

  1. Open the ODBC Data Source Administrator.
  2. Select the User DSN or System DSN and click Add.
  3. Select Devart ODBC Driver for Salesforce and click Finish.
  4. Enter the connection information in the appropriate fields. For more information about connecting to Salesforce via the ODBC driver on this step, see the documentation.
  5. You may test the connectivity by clicking the Test Connection button. Then click OK to save the DSN.
